Seeking real-time cargo information from Shanghai to Savannah

The location and security of containerized cargo transported between the port of Shanghai in China and the port of Savannah in Georgia will be automatically tracked via a new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based system. Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) and Savi Networks, which provides real-time information services on in-transit inventory, announced the pilot program in a recent press release.

SIPG and Savi have jointly developed a localized China RFID solution, which extends a previous project conducted by SIPG from Shanghai to Yantai in China. The solution will be built on an open, international standards-based network platform, including compatibility with ISO standard 18000-7 for active RFID devices and ISO standard 18185 for electronic container security devices, both operating at the 433.92 MHz radio frequency.

After successful completion of the pilot project, SIPG and Savi Networks will extend its RFID-based solution and SaviTrak information service to terminal facilities operated by SIPG at the Port of Shanghai, according to Savi Networks.
