The lifeblood of ECM

The San Diego Blood Bank is expanding its enterprise content management solution to improve information access and blood ordering processes and to help meet regulatory requirements.

The solution, Livelink ECM from Open Text, will provide a central Web content management platform for the organization's Web site and will also manage a planned intranet/extranet that will serve the more than 50 area hospitals that rely on the San Diego Blood Bank. The intranet/extranet will give hospitals information on blood supplies and automate blood orders, using workflows and document management capabilities.

According to a recent news release from Open Text, the San Diego Blood Bank wanted one content repository to help ensure accurate information and timely updates to Web content--whether published to the Web site or to the intranet/extranet. That's crucial to meeting such regulations as providing current information on blood donor requirements.

"The Web has become one of our most important channels for reaching hospitals, donors and the community in general," says Doug Morton, director of IT for the blood bank. "Our goal is to both improve processes and improve the speed and accuracy of communication. Tightly integrating Web content management, document management and workflow tools is the only way to accomplish this."

The blood bank's new solution will build on its existing Livelink system, which manages documents in accordance with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's 21 CFR Par 11 regulations for the collection, management and distribution of blood.
