Using data and news to help children

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) uses data and news from LexisNexis to help with its goal of providing support services for families in the prevention and investigation of abducted, endangered and sexually exploited children.

The organization works with the families of missing and abducted children, and law enforcement agencies, to provide technical help and search resources. Last year, for example, NCMEC worked with LexisNexis on a case in Florida in which a father vanished with his young children, leaving the mother behind. With only a name to go on, law enforcement officials were able to locate the father and missing children within days, according to a news release from LexisNexis.

Ernie Allen, NCMEC president and CEO, says, "We rely on them for legal research, real-time news of current high-profile cases and people locater services that help us quickly develop a data trail to guide our searches and help bring more children home safely."

NCMEC uses LexisNexis resources in the following ways:

  • The President's Office uses them to provide help to state and federal lawmakers seeking to improve child protection laws.

  • The Office of Legal Counsel uses them for a broad spectrum of legal research.

  • The Case Analysis and Support Division uses them to access breaking news about high-profile cases they are supporting.

  • The International Division uses them to search for international child abduction cases regarding specific countries to identify judges and lawyers to target for regional training or seminars.

  • The Communications Department uses them to conduct daily searches for news articles that mention NCMEC.
