How KM Is Redefining Federal Records Management

Produced by Steve Nathans-Kelly

Federal records management is more important than ever as compliance shifts with each passing year. Protecting documents is crucial. At KMWorld 2022 Dave Simmons, GSA KM specialist and senior records officer, stressed the importance of the role of KM in the future of federal records management.

“In records management we focus on reducing resources and attention required by eliminating, actually destroying, documents,” Simmons said. “Eliminating that content and reducing it allows people to focus on what they need rather than searching for something and getting so much stuff they don’t have to sort through.”

The future of federal records saves people time looking for relevant information, increases confidence locating information quickly and completely, and protects individuals and organizations from legal risk, he said.

“I joke that the best way to clear the room is to say, ‘records management,’” Simmons said. “One of the things is to not focus on the compliance schtick but think about the value you bring by doing records management.”
