The ultimate KM challenge: Healthcare informaticists work toward meaningful alerts at the point of care.

Delivering a summary of alerts to clinicians

The federal government's electronic health record "meaningful use" incentive program presents clinicians with a series of issues, says Mansoor Khan, CEO of DiagnosisOne, whose smartConsult module integrates with electronic health records to deliver patient-specific alerts at the point of care. The government program is requiring increased use of computerized physician order entry, clinical decision support rules and a variety of quality measure reports. "These are all knowledge management challenges that we can help clinicians address," Khan says. DiagnosisOne's software delivers a summary of alerts to clinicians. Based on new patient information entered during an encounter, the patient's complete record is run against the company's rules engine of more than 25,000 evidence-based guidelines. Care recommendations are delivered in real time at the point of care via the electronic health record.
