Evolving search engines with natural language understanding at KMWorld 2019

Search engines have come a long way since the 1990s and natural language understanding is the latest tool that can evolve search.

Paul Nelson, innovation lead, Accenture, introduced KMWorld 2019 attendees to Saga, a Natural Language Understanding Framework, during his presentation, “Natural Language Understanding for the Enterprise.” This session was part of the Enterprise Search and Discovery conference taking place alongside KMWorld.

Machine learning and knowledge graph ready, Saga is an easy-to-use NLU system for extracting valuable insights from unstructured data.

“The evolution of search from Yahoo! versus Google describes what’s happening inside Accenture and the world, we have something that is complicated with hierarchies and the world is migrating from that to simplicity,” Nelson said. “It’s more scalable.”

According to Nelson, Accenture is trying to advance the understanding of what a search engine can do. It should be able to find information in one place from the entire organization.

“We need to be bridging the gap between the user and the content with semantic search,” Nelson said.

Natural language understanding can identify when ambiguity exists and make intelligent guesses based on context wheras natural language processing will just identify entities, Nelson explained.

Effective search needs to move from the concrete to the abstract.

KMWorld 2019 is a part of a unique program of five co-located conferences, which also includes Enterprise Search & Discovery, Office 365 Symposium, Taxonomy Boot Camp, and Text Analytics Forum.
