Microsoft Previews New Business Video Service Called "Stream"
Microsoft has announced a free preview of Microsoft Stream, a new business video service for access to and discovery of video at work.
Stream was announced in a Microsoft blog by James Phillips, corporate vice president, Microsoft Business Intelligence Products Group.
With video becoming an important way to connect, communicate, and learn across geographic boundaries and bringing a human element to digital interactions, Phillips says Microsoft believes video can become equally impactful in the workplace.
According to Phillips, anyone with a business email address can sign up for the preview of the new service which aims to take the “work” out of managing video storage and security, enabling organizations and their employees to communicate and collaborate with video more easily.
With this preview, Phillips said, Microsoft is making capabilities to support video management and sharing within an organization, and make it more collaborative and social. Features include drag and drop capabilities to upload videos and organize them by either starting a channel or contributing to a channel-based on team, group, or topic; enhanced content discovery through “trending” videos powered by machine learning, as well as search by hashtag, most-liked videos, and other key search terms; and the ability to view videos in Microsoft Stream on all devices.
Stream is designed to enable organizations to control who views video content by determining how widely to share within the organization, and to what channels, with secure application access enabled by Azure Active Directory to protect sensitive corporate content.
With the ability to integrate Microsoft Stream with business apps such as PowerApps, Microsoft Flow, SharePoint and other line-of-business applications, Phillips said that Microsoft sees opportunities to further leverage video across applications.
Microsoft Stream builds on Office 365 Video, and over time, the two are planned to converge, ultimately making Stream the de facto video experience in Office 365. However, during the preview of Microsoft Stream, there will be no changes to the Office 365 Video experience, said Phillips.
