KM has become the critical player in leveraging tools such as GPT within the enterprise setting.

At KMWorld 2023, Ian Hook, director, KM and insights excellence, Novartis, discussed Novartis' journey to implement GPT-like solutions and how proper KM principles are essential to making it work during his session, “How KM Saved AI: The GPT Journey.”

“KM should own the conversation around ChatGPT,” Hook said.

He shared the practical tips and tricks learned along the way and helped participants plan their journey to do the same.

He explained that AI is moving fast, and it has the potential to disrupt not only our business but also the way we do business.

“AI is really capable now,” Hook said. “But very few understand it, and nobody knows how to use it.”

However, Gartner predicts that 99% of AI initiatives will fail due to a lack of established KM in their organization. It comes down to three reasons why it will fail: scalability, sustainability, and compliance.

“We really need to think about applying this to a proper use case to get the right value out of it,” Hook said.

Using an internal, pre-trained model on your proprietary data gives you control. By consolidating content, understanding the content, and curating the content, it will enable companies to get the right information.

Novartis created a strategy utilizing NLP to feed a repository with content. The repository is then regularly maintained to ensure it contains high-quality content. LLM’s can then be run over that repository with confidence in the output, he said.

Practical ways to use this is by creating question and answer bots; leveraging assisted content creation; or meta-content creation.

“Can I look at what’s going on now and can I abstract from that what the trends are going to be in 3-5 years?” Hook said.

The future of AI and LLMs could answer this question, Hook said.

“ChatGPT is not the world, it’s part of a bigger picture,” said Hook. “I think everybody need to recognize that.”

First people need to take some time to understand how this technology works. Then, gather the use cases from your business. Start structuring your knowledge pipeline to ensure the long-term value of your builds, considering key points like taxonomy, content consolidation, governance, etc.

KMWorld returned to the J.W. Marriott in Washington D.C. on November 6-9, with pre-conference workshops held on November 6.

KMWorld 2023 is a part of a unique program of five co-located conferences, which also includes Enterprise Search & Discovery, Enterprise AI World, Taxonomy Boot Camp, and Text Analytics Forum.
