BackupAssist Announces Cloud-Independent Data Protection for SMBs

BackupAssist, a provider of automated Windows server backup and recovery software for small and medium enterprises, is rolling out version 10 of its BackupAssist backup and disaster recovery software. With the availability of version 10, customers can use their preferred public cloud infrastructure for the storage of their backup data.

The new software allows customers and partners to leverage existing cloud accounts and infrastructure with their choice of redundancy level and backup vault locations to meet cost, compliance, and performance requirements.

The requirements of small and medium enterprises are globally diverse, with many customers requiring a data recovery solution that can be customized to meet their computing needs, said Linus Chang, CEO and co-founder of BackupAssist, who noted that, with BackupAssist, customers have the option of storing backup data in Amazon S3 or Microsoft Azure with high-performance deduplication and security.

With BackupAssist 10, customers can choose their cloud vendor as well as determine the physical locations where their data will be stored.  Customers can also be assured of receiving the maximum data deduplication/compression efficiency because the customer selects the final backup storage location, eliminating backup and storage provider conflicts of interest, according to BackupAssist.

The new feature provides a pay-per-use option, and in addition to the current options of Amazon AWS S3 and Microsoft Azure, support for additional public and private cloud options will be announced in 2017.

Supporting data privacy, data is encrypted before leaving the customer server for both client-side and end-to-end non-convergent encryption. And, utilizing AES-256 encryption, each container is independent of each other, even if multiple containers exist on the same cloud account or in multi-tenanted systems. Different encryption keys are used for each container and the cloud provider has zero-knowledge of the content, mitigating the risk of data theft.

Providing nearly 4X data deduplication and compression also reduces bandwidth use and storage space needs when backing up to the cloud. And finally, for advanced application backup and recovery, BackupAssist protects Hyper-V guests, Exchange Server, SQL Server and other platforms.
