Collaborative classification

Verity has introduced Collaborative Classifier 1.0, what it says is the first taxonomy and classification management software that enables distributed subject matter experts to collaborate with corporate librarians and knowledge engineers in real time to organize information around specific business roles and requirements.

Verity reports capabilities of the new product include:

• workflow-based collaboration to allow taxonomy and classification management to be distributed to assigned subject matter experts who know the content, as well as to knowledge engineers who know and understand taxonomy development.

• automatic classification and publishing capabilities that leverage domain expertise to keep taxonomies up-to-date in real time.

Verity says the software permits the maintenance of the taxonomies to be distributed to authorize users, subject matter experts and knowledge engineers, based on individuals’ roles within the enterprise. Roles can be distributed to as granular a level as required by individual organizations. For example, says the company, a corporate librarian could be able to modify an entire taxonomy, while an editor has access to a top-level category, and a subject matter expert is responsible for only one subcategory.

The offering automatically assigns or publishes documents to categories once taxonomies have been set up. During that phase, says Verity, the software scores each document, using Verity’s automatic classification with business rules for each category. A document is then accepted into the category, routed to a publisher for approval or rejected based on the configurable threshold determined for that category.

The browser-based client allows users to manage taxonomies and classification directly through their Web browsers. Additionally, the interface lets them use all of the software’s advanced features without requiring significant training or expertise.

Verity Collaborative Classifier scales linearly to handle the growth of users, documents, taxonomies and categories. Such scalability allows an intellectual capital management system to expand with the needs of a business, evolving to meet users’ needs as they leverage information over time.
