Tips for Creating a Culture of KM-Enabled Change

Key strategies for enabling KM-enabled organizational change were explored at KMWorld 2018 in two sessions.

The 22nd KMWorld conference is co-located with Taxonomy Boot Camp 2018Enterprise Search & DiscoveryText Analytics Forum ’18, and Office 365 Symposium.

In a session titled “Creating a Positive Change Culture,” Ann Marie DiNardo, User Adoption & Stakeholder Engagement Lead, REI Systems, looked at how to create a change culture that supports organizations in making their vision into a reality.

Looking at knowledge management in the context of change management, noted it is important that a business case for change is clearly articulated as well as how knowledge management tools can create a change culture.

KM World 2019 will be held November 5-7, 2019 at the JW Marriott in Washington, DC, with pre-conference workshops on November 4.

According to DiNardo, it is critical to identify the needs of the stakeholders and the support required to empower them to bring about change for your organization. If the culture is not there, tools will not enable success even though there are great tools, said DiNardo.

The Business Case for Change

To develop a clear and impactful business case aligned to the mission and vision of the organization, prepare a Mission Statement, a Vision Statement, a Business Case, and a list of possible Factors for Risk for not changing, said DiNardo, who provided examples for each.

DiNardo laid out the key steps for successfully advancing a KM initiative with details of how to present each.

1-Lay the foundation for change by engaging key stakeholders and communicate the vision, anticipated changes and benefits

2-Conduct a stakeholder analysis, understand perceptions, address concerns and educate on role for how the changes will be implemented

3-Build ownership and provide opportunities to provide input on how the changes are carried out.

4-Demonstrate effectiveness of new solution to facilitate user adoption and allow for future innovations

In another session titled, “War Stories, Insights, & Surprises,” Patricia Eng, senior advisor for Knowledge Management, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and co-author of “Navigating the Minefield: A Practical KM Companion,” and Mike Prevou, president, Strategic Knowledge Solutions, presented the tactics and initiatives used by successful KM practitioners around the world and identified the major factors needed for a successful KM program.

There are 4 major drivers for KM program, said Eng:

1-risk, real or anticipated

2-a desire to improve operations

3-a leader’s vision and innovation

4-regulations or directions from one of the above

The New ISO KM Standard 30401

The new ISO KM Standard 30401 is an effort started in 2014, said Eng. It was issued in October 2018 and will become effective in 2021. The intent of ISO Standard 30401 is to set sound KM principles and requirements, help organizations optimize the value of organizational knowledge, and serve as the basis for auditing and certifying organizations by internal and external recognized auditing bodies. According to Eng, the standard is primarily focused on standard on what KM means to an organization and its business outcomes and not specific KM standards. It will help management to figure out their business strategy is and identify its plans for KM in the organization.
