Delving deep into e-mail

KnowledgeMail 1.3 from Tacit Knowledge Systems can now be accessed from an intranet or portal, where content can be viewed and acted on in context with other applications or directories. The software, which can determine the knowledge, skills and work focus of each employee, also includes deeper integration with Lotus.

Under the control of each individual user, KnowledgeMail automatically creates private and public profiles of everyone in the enterprise and maintains them in real-time. The system makes that information accessible across the enterprise, thereby linking information seekers with knowledge holders on any given topic.

The new version’s Intranet Integration Toolkit is designed to allow enterprises to easily integrate KnowledgeMail with their corporate portals, intranet web sites and corporate directories so users can search and browse profiles from any intranet Web site. The toolkit also allows customization of the look and “feel” of the software, so that an existing corporate identity can be easily integrated into the application’s interface. Further, KnowledgeMail 1.3 runs on top of Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes and Domino R5.

With the new software, e-mail distribution lists can be expanded so they can more effectively target the right recipients instead of distributing e-mail to those who would have no interest. The product also makes it possible for users to initiate KnowledgeSweep from the e-mail client. With KnowledgeSweep, users are able to connect to the organization’s private and tacit knowledge without sacrificing any user’s complete and total privacy. KnowledgeSweep works by searching the private areas of users’ profiles, yet instead of returning matches to the seeker, the system alerts the matching individual that he/she has been found. The found individual decides whether or not to be known. Additionally, it is now possible to scope or limit the number of suggested recipients by data fields in an LDAP server, thereby increasing its overall performance for large organizations.

KnowledgeMail Central is a new service designed to give first time users an easy, self sufficient way to get the software and training required to participate in the system. It includes software downloads, installation and product training as well as answers to frequently asked questions.
