FileNet driving with dashboard

Months after Microsoft unveiled its vision of the digital dashboard, the dashboard lingo has found its way into a product name in FileNet’s Panagon Dashboard.

Panagon Dashboard is a new portal environment for Panagon IDM Desktop 3.0 integrated document management software. With it, users will be able to utilize FileNet’s document managment capabilities through the Web.

This spring, Microsoft began speaking about digital dashboards as a way to replace users’ home screens with buttons and icons that launch users’ commonly used apps and lead and update them on information that is pertinent and interesting to them. Avoiding the word portal (though to many it sounded just like that), Microsoft made clear it was not talking about a product it was developing, but rather a vision of what partners could do using both companies’ technology.

"The Panagon Dashboard functionality builds on the ‘Digital Dashboard' concept from Microsoft to give corporate users a unified window into business-critical information located throughout the enterprise," said Lee Roberts, FileNet president and CEO. "This new functionality of Panagon Dashboard brings the Web, integrated document management, workflow and other business applications together in a way that is easy for users to understand and deploy."

FileNet plans to deliver this functionality later this year, to let users view, manage, revise, share and distribute documents across the enterprise without leaving the Microsoft Outlook environment.

"It extends the corporate portal concept by offering richer personalization of Outlook Today to combine documents with personal e-mail, calendar, contacts, task list and journals into a single Digital Dashboard," said Roberts.

Stan Julien, director of customer and knowledge management for Microsoft’s Business Solutions Group, said: "The portal capability that is provided in the Panagon Dashboard from FileNet is the kind of vertical application support for which our Digital Dashboard concept exists--to provide the ultimate in ease of use and high performance for collaborative computing, making more information available to more users and enhancing the productivity of the business processes within any enterprise--all within Microsoft Outlook."

When Panagon Dashboard is unveiled, users will install IDM Desktop 3.0 to customize their Outlook navigation bar, pull-down menus and mouse controls to directly access Panagon 2000 functionality within Microsoft Outlook.
