HP, IBM and Seagate aim to offer storage format specifications

Hewlett-Packard (Palo Alto, CA), IBM

(San Jose, CA) and Seagate Technology (Scotts Valley, CA) have announced an agreement to introduce new tape technology. The goal of the collaboration is to offer open format specifications for the storage industry. "Storage technologies on the market today do not yield a comprehensive solution that meets the broad set of needs that tape addresses," said Michael Matson, VP and general manager of HP. Proposed benefits of the specifications are scalable performance characteristics for various platforms, multiple sources of media, and multivendor format specifications for data interchange.
