Utilizing technology as an enabler for knowledge management at KMWorld 2023

Selecting, deploying, and optimizing tools and technologies are vital to the success of KM.

At KMWorld 2023, Kemi Ayanda, multi-sectoral strategic leader and organizational change expert, strategy planning and execution, NEOM and UNICAF, discussed the considerations and best practices in selecting and deploying a next-generation KM system in a multi-dimensional setting.

“The beginning point isn’t just technology, it’s coming up with a strategy to achieve operational objectives,” Ayanda said.

A well-informed KM strategy rests on key pillars that include people and culture, an operating model, and technology.

“With the right strategy, technology becomes and enabler for effective KM across intricate and complex organizational structures,” Ayanda said.

A roadmap to robust KMS deployment includes:

  • Defining KMS requirements
  • Defining path to delivery
  • Selecting system realization option
  • Selecting onboard delivery partners to develop platform

Essential features underpinning successful KM can consist of advanced repositories, smart search algorithms, user-centric ideation spaces, cybersecurity considerations, and more.

Scalability, interoperability, security, and cost-effectiveness impact tool and technology choices as well as the importance of evaluating functionality, usability, vendor support, and future-proofing for informed decision making, she explained.

Effective deployment tactics such as piloting, user training, and change management are emphasized, along with optimizing tool utilization, monitoring performance, and adapting to changing business needs.

Taking a systematic approach to selecting, deploying, and optimizing tools and technologies enables organizations to improve operational skills, streamline processes, and gain a competitive advantage.

“A tool is only as powerful as the hand that feeds it,” she said. “It is an instrument, not a composer. It’s just one of the many important parts of a KM strategy.”

KMWorld returned to the J.W. Marriott in Washington D.C. on November 6-9, with pre-conference workshops held on November 6.

KMWorld 2023 is a part of a unique program of five co-located conferences, which also includes Enterprise Search & Discovery, Enterprise AI World, Taxonomy Boot Camp, and Text Analytics Forum.
