Artificial intelligence is on everyone’s mind, it’s been touted as the next big disruption to life and work as we know it.

At KMWorld 2019, Gordon Vala-Webb, CEO, Building Smarter Organizations and board member, International Association of Innovation Professionals, discussed the different kinds of AI, various tools, and more during his workshop, “AI 101 for KM.”

KMWorld 2019 is a part of a unique program of five co-located conferences, which also includes Enterprise Search & Discovery, Office 365 Symposium, Taxonomy Boot Camp, and Text Analytics Forum.

“AI is still new,” Vala-Webb said. “It’s at the beginning and we keep learning about it all the time. You can’t wait until it’s clear enough, you have to start now. If you wait until it’s clear, it’s too late.”

Within the knowledge management space, AI can be helpful in categorizing data and solving complex business problems.

“We are collecting more and more data but knowing less and less what it actually means in large measure,” said Vala-Webb.

According to Vala-Webb, he thinks KM should include:

  • Predictions and bets
  • Flows of info, ideas, and decisions
  • Designing and nurturing

“Knowledge management should be about decision making,” he said. “With more information or ideas, we can make better decisions.”

A custom built AI solution will combine technologies with tools and methodologies, business knowledge and expertise, AI expertise and focus on a specific business opportunity.

Knowledge management use cases include:

  • Customized/personalized search
  • K (customer) support “bots”
  • Text analytics and NLP
  • Life Sciences – diagnoses and finding cures
  • Cybersecurity – attacks and effective responses

However, AI is still bogged down with inherent biases, Vala-Webb explained.

“Any dataset has bias built into it by whoever collected data in the first place,” he said. “You need to be mindful and check the data.”
