Insurance company strives for efficiency through e-discovery

Auto-Owners Insurance has deployed an e-discovery solution to support its legal department’s efforts to make processes more efficient.

Kathleen Lopilato, assistant VP, Legal Department with Auto-Owners Insurance, says, “When dealing with matters previously, our e-discovery process was highly manual, which made it tedious, time-consuming, labor intensive and expensive. With the addition of Exterro, we are able to streamline the process, from putting a custodian on legal hold through review and production.”

Sloan Banfield, senior attorney with Auto-Owners Insurance, says, “The addition of Exterro Legal Hold will give us an automated, defensible and repeatable process. Our previous e-discovery process at Auto-Owners Insurance was a largely manual process dependent on email. For the most part, it was a very good process, but as we know, there are limits in what can be done with a manual process that will be greatly improved with the addition of Exterro.”

In addition to Exterro Legal Hold, the insurance company is also using Exterro Data Management and Exterro Employee Change Monitor to improve legal department processes. Lopilato explains, “Over the past year, we have worked on numerous initiatives, including the addition of a Legal Operations team. Our Legal and IT teams are working together on e-discovery and other legal projects. The addition of Exterro solutions will help us to realize the efficiencies that can be gained with an automated e-discovery process.”
