Profile

Collexis, a leading developer of semantic search and knowledge discovery software, develops applications that range from search tools for your website to highly sophisticated discovery applications which are utilized by the intelligence community and R&D organizations worldwide. These applications allow the user to identify and search for documents, experts, trends, or new discoveries which may be hidden in the materials. Collexis now offers the world’s first pre-populated professional social network for life science researchers, www.biomedexperts.com.

Collexis software creates profiles of text—web pages, documents, e-mails, speech transcripts, grants, etc. These profiles represent the key ideas or concepts in those texts and are presented in a format known as the Collexis Fingerprint. Once Collexis has profiled a set of text, we use the fingerprints (or document profiles) to create the applications.

Matching of concepts eliminates the ambiguity and lack of priority associated with word searches. The results are often described as “finding needles in many haystacks.” Through this novel approach, Collexis can build unique applications using Fingerprints to search, index, and aggregate information as well as prioritize, trend and predict data without the limitations of language or dialect.

Expert Profiling and Knowledge Dashboards are two applications that are being utilized at the top research and corporate institutions around the world. Collexis has established engagements with the NIH, Wellcome Trust, Johns Hopkins, the Mayo Clinic, University of South Carolina, University of California San Francisco, University of Michigan, Oregon Health Sciences University, to name a few.

Collexis has also established key partnerships with publishers and other third party providers to provide the market place with robust innovative applications. In a partnership with Dell, Collexis launched the world’s first pre-populated professional social network for life science researchers BiomedExperts.com. The partnership with Thomson Scientific (Thomson Reuters) marries the Web of Science with the Knowledge Dashboard to create the Knowledge Dashboard powered by Web of Science.

Our growing list of clients includes the US Department of Defense, Lockheed Martin, the Dutch police force, the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, Johns Hopkins University, the Mayo Clinic, Stanford University, the University of California, San Francisco, the University of South Carolina, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Bristol-Myers Squibb, DSM and many more.

KMWorld Trend-Setting Products of 2008
What makes a trend-setting product?
When we first started identifying products six years ago, we were still seeing some radical new technology and tried to select solutions that would be embraced by the marketplace and gain wide adoption.
A few of the companies that developed the products have gone belly up; more have been acquired by other vendors. However, all things considered, we've been quite accurate selecting products that deliver customer value, which is the underlying principle that defines this year's list.

KMWorld 100 Companies That Matter in Knowledge Management 2008
So why do these companies matter? Not necessarily because they are the most innovative, but that's a factor. Not because they are ahead of the curve on Enterprise 2.0 initiatives, but that's also a factor. Not because they are the most financially successful (that's not a factor), and not because they have the most efficient marketing engines—that's not a factor either. We have long held that the true essence of knowledge management is an attitude, a single-minded commitment to improvement.
