Imagine, too, that the factory's manager allowed large numbers of finished goods to sit on the loading dock indefinitely without ever being shipped to customers... Posted April 13, 2010

"Enterprise search." For some reasons it's become the third rail for technology companies, pundits and users as well. We start off this month by getting into the terminology surrounding this market. I'm not entirely clear on the reason, but the analyst community has fled from the term "enterprise search..." Posted April 13, 2010

Ask a Microsoft executive about Google and you get an earful. Ask Google about Microsoft and you may elicit a meh... Posted April 01, 2010

When we established our list of 100 Companies That Matter 10 years ago, "knowledge management" was just beginning to be a recognized term in the boardroom. KM is not now (nor will it ever likely be) a household word. Nor is it an application. It's an attitude, a commitment to excellence and innovation shared by the companies, large and small, on this list. A decade ago, a lot of vendors were so intoxicated by their technology that they tried to woo their customers with dazzling features, capabilities they thrust upon clients without fully understanding their legitimate needs. Now, in 2010, that's no longer true. The firms on this list are true solution providers that are dedicated to understanding what their customers need and delivering elegant technology for the requirements of the knowledge economy... The impact has been reflected in increased attention to fixed-price models, low-cost outsourcing and use of automation. In addition, companies in highly litigated industries are attempting to reduce risk through e-discovery readiness... Posted February 01, 2010

Google's enterprise services received what Italians call chiaroscuro. The idea is that light falls across a canvas and reveals details that might otherwise be difficult to perceive. The PR blitz for Chrome as a new Google operating system is interesting, but it may not make it easy to see two broader enterprise initiatives revealed in July 2009. The penetrating light came from two different continents and concerned two quite different Google services... Posted October 28, 2009
