Mission possible

The plans of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center San Diego to develop and deploy a knowledge management system includes software from Entopia. The Navy has chosen Entopia's Quantum for its information management component.

"The software was selected based on an assessment of its capabilities and its ability to meet the Navy's needs," says Hiekeun Ko, principal investigator at SSC San Diego.

According to a recent press release from Entopia, SSC San Diego wanted a scalable, cost-effective solution to meet mission-critical communication requirements and to ensure that information is in the hands of decision makers when needed. SSC San Diego also is said to have chosen Quantum because it is available as a browser-based client, providing universal access. Entopia Knowledge Locator, Quantum's semantic engine, was also said to be a drawing card.

"Entopia's ability to build a knowledgebase as a natural by-product of the individual's research and project work, essentially from the bottom up and evolving over time, will help arm our warfighters with the knowledge critical to accomplishing their missions," says Peter Katz, EVP of sales and marketing at Entopia.

SSC San Diego is the Navy's research, development, evaluation, engineering and fleet support center for communication systems and ocean surveillance. It is one of five field activities of Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), which with its systems centers provides much of the tactical and non-tactical information management technology required by the Navy to complete its operational mission.
