Clinically proven document capture

Lahey Clinic Medical Center has chosen a document capture software solution to streamline processing and access to medical records. The physician-led, non-profit medical practice is deploying InputAccel from Captiva Software to turn paper documents into electronic content and thus solve the problems associated with storing and finding paper records.

Lahey Clinic will use the system in its medical records department for patient records, in its finance department for invoices and explanation of benefit forms, and in its registration areas to capture digital images of insurance cards and patient encounter forms, according to a recent press release from Captiva. The resulting images and index data will be exported to a Documentum enterprise content management system.

The solution will be implemented initially at Lahey Clinic's main facility in Burlington, Mass., but will be expanded eventually to create a distributed capture solution across three medical center campuses and 18 outpatient facilities. The Clinic also plans to use InputAccel for Invoices for automated invoice processing in the accounts payable department, Captiva says.

The new system is expected to solve problems inherent with storing and accessing paper medical records, forms and documents, such as space constraints and costs, the inability of more than one person to access a file at a time, and the possibility of misplaced or damaged files. The system is also expected to increase the productivity of personnel and reduce operating costs, according to Captiva.
