Search still big in KM

In Lotus Development's eyes, a big part ofknowledge management remains finding information and the people who haveknowledge, and putting the two together.

And, according to John Caffrey, senior product manager for Lotus'Domino Extended Search, a large part of doing that relies on quality searchtools.

That emphasis could be seen at the KMWorld'99 Conference and Expo inDallas where Lotus unveiled the latest version of Domino Extended Search.Release 2.0 goes further toward the ultimate goal of searching, according toCaffrey.

"People are trying to find information," he said. "They want to sit down, type in a query to go to all of their back-end systems and come back with aconsolidated list with ranking."

That's what Domino Extended Search has sought to do from the beginning.Release 2.0 adds several major enhancements. It extends the back-end reachto different sources, it offers a specialized link for Domino.Doc files, andit reaches more Web search engines including Yahoo and Excite. It alsooffers a new browser client, and is more out of the box than it was.Caffrey said that some new wizards and other changes in V 2.0 help get usersstarted and make it easier to use
