Coming to the aid of animals

The Animal Poison Control Center of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has chosen a knowledge management solution to improve its call center service. The Center says the new software will upgrade the consistency and quality of its responses to calls regarding animal medical emergencies and safety matters.

"The ASPCA Poison Control Center is committed to protecting and improving the lives of animals through our educational programs and research," says Harold Trammel, senior director of IT for the Center. "Our extensive medical records database includes over 800,000 cases. The solution will be instrumental in providing our staff with rapid access to this critical information to help save the lives of animals and further our efforts to educate the public regarding animal safety."

The new KM system from Kaidara Software will be used to harvest and retrieve important proprietary veterinary medical records and toxicology information used across the Poison Control Center's special services. It also will be used to provide life-saving information to the Center's support staff and veterinarians who handle incoming calls, according to a recent news release from Kaidara.

The Poison Control Center, which is the first animal-oriented one, handles an average of 300 to 500 calls per day, 200 to 300 new cases per day.
