An "information-advantaged" company is one that uses information more effectively than its competitors. The Leadership Council for Information Advantage released a report this month that discussed how to turn information into a competitive advantage. While it is a high-level goal, the recommendations were concrete and merit consideration. One source of rich information is the data that is contained in paper or electronic documents. In this article we'll discuss how case management technologies such as capture and process automation and can help organizations use information for competitive advantage.

The information within a document is enormously valuable, but if it exists only on paper or locked in an electronic format like Word or PDF, it is difficult to use. When data is transferred to business systems using manual data entry and tagging/classification, you are throttling your productivity with manual steps that are expensive, slow and error-prone. . . .

First, some definitions: Business process management (BPM) is a discipline that confronts inefficient, rigid and error-prone enterprisewide business processes. It provides techniques, methods and tools to model, automate, implement and optimize these processes to improve operating effectiveness and agility and bolster business results.

Enterprise content management (ECM) is a discipline to manage and publish structured and unstructured content created by humans and applications in a meaningful way. It uses strategies, methods and technologies to capture, archive and deliver content according to an organization's business processes.

BPM and ECM must work together to bring agility to the business, flexibility to changing environments and the ability to manage information to create business success.

It's a hoary cliché (in fact, "hoary cliché" is a hoary cliché) that the paperless office is about as likely to happen as the paperless bathroom.There are plenty of folks out there, like Theresa Kollath, director of product management for ASG, who are willing to address—and try to solve—the many challenges that businesses face when trying to overcome their dependence on thinly pressed sheets of crushed wood pulp.I spoke with Theresa at length the other day, and I'll try not to interrupt her words too often. But I probably will."More of our customers than you would think are still involved in paper. There are folks who are still creating custom communications in the process of issuing, say, a new mortgage. In that case, there is a large amount of forms, and someone has to initial the bottom of each page.
