Access Innovations, Inc., Jay Ven Eman CEO, View From the Top

"I remember a time when it was almost impossible to describe what our company does," reminisces Access Innovations' CEO Jay Ven Eman. "In 1978, not many people understood how computers worked, nor were people aware of the existence of the Internet, what it was and what it could do. The Internet has been around for a long time, but originally the major users were academics and the defense industry. It is much easier to explain the basics of what we do now that almost anyone can get on the Internet and use those data resources."

Access Innovations began like many entrepreneurial enterprises-with a great idea, a few energetic people, and a little bit of capital. Incorporated in October 1978, the company's first headquarters was the kitchen of President Marjorie M. K. Hlava's Albuquerque home. The original product was to be a database of solar energy information and resources. It soon became clear, however, that the process the original partners were using was of more value to potential customers than the database itself.

"Over the past 35 years, we've helped a lot of prestigious companies build their databases, knowledge management systems, and intranets," says Ven Eman. "We've worked on projects of nearly every size and kind, from huge SGML-based corporate intranets to sole proprietors' customer records. We avail ourselves of every conceivable software, and we've converted data on every platform. It's been very exciting, yet in some ways I feel like this is just the beginning."

Access Innovations stays on the cutting edge of knowledge management by continuously adding new services based on client needs and industry demands. The services of the company continue to expand and now include a complete line of information management support services, including building and implementing controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, and ontologies to leverage content semantics and search.

"Search using taxonomies for browsing and tagging of content is incredibly more precise and allows full recall of records in the data holdings," Hlava says. "Every one of our installations is a new puzzle and variation in the same solid theoretical and technological base. It's challenging, fun, and makes every day interesting."

Access Innovations' award-winning Data Harmony software suite makes it all possible. It's the powerful combination of 35 years of continuous innovation. The suite currently includes: Thesaurus Master®, making thesaurus construction and management simple; M.A.I.TM (Machine Aided Indexer), providing editorial aid in indexing; MAIstroTM, combining both Thesaurus Master and M.A.I. for maximum efficiency; and XIS® (XML Intranet System), an XML content management system for the creation and management of XML database records in a user-friendly format.

Data Harmony provides knowledge management solutions to organize your information resources based on a well-built and systematically applied thesaurus. Data Harmony's software tools enable you to construct a logical framework of topics, reflecting the vocabulary of your business or subject area—and then apply these topic terms to your resources precisely and consistently. The result: your search becomes information found accurately and quickly.
