Windham Professionals, which specializes in collection services for education, commercial, retail, government and healthcare organizations, implemented Microsoft SharePoint to improve its internal systems and enable collaboration within the business. The challenge facing the company was finding a way to secure SharePoint to meet regulatory standards, monitor document access and secure documents centrally and automatically.

After exploring multiple options, Windham selected the HiSoftware Sheriff suite for SharePoint, including HiSoftware Compliance Sheriff SP and Security Sheriff SP. HiSoftware reports that Windham chose its solution because of its metadata-driven, item-level security to restrict access to, encrypt, track and prevent the distribution of content based on the presence of sensitive or non-compliant information.

Patrick Cote, director of infrastructure and information security at Windham, says, “HiSoftware had a mature solution for the challenges we wanted to solve. Security Sheriff gives us the ability to be granular on who has access to data, which you don’t get out of the box. With the HiSoftware suite, we are able to maximize our investment in SharePoint by rolling it out to every person in our organization knowing that the platform is secure.”

Windham uses the solution to define policies and establish rules for who can have access to structured data using item-level classification and to control how data can be distributed, according to HiSoftware. Also, the software can scan documents at rest and apply the classifications and restrictions based on the content within the document, or documents in motion can be classified manually as they are created.
