FileNet adds to stable

FileNet has announced it will acquire Yaletown Technology Group, a content compliance company based in Vancouver, BC. Additionally, the $11-million, all-cash deal is said to strengthen FileNet's ability to enhance and support its existing e-mail management product capabilities now and into the future. FileNet and Yaletown Technology Group have been marketing an integrated e-mail management offering through an OEM relationship.

FileNet has also released the latest iteration of its Records Manager suite, Version 3.5. Significant new capabilities include Intelligent Retention, which provides alternative or optional retention periods based on any number of variables or rules that may be imposed upon an organization by multiple regulatory authorities. For example, the company explains, most organizations conduct business across many jurisdictions (i.e. states, provinces or countries) and must comply with the different retention rules imposed upon them by multiple government and regulatory authorities. They often run the risk of applying the wrong retention period for records in a specific jurisdiction. By accounting for the different rules across multiple jurisdictions, FileNet says, Records Manager now accommodates the many variables and conditions that mandate retention while simultaneously reducing complexity and chance of error, thus lowering records administration costs and effort.

Version 3.5 is also integrated with FileNet Content Federation Services (CFS), which enables Records Manager to be integrated with and federate content from a broad range of both FileNet and non-FileNet content repositories. The services allow enterprises to search, catalog, classify, secure, retain, comply, activate, update and delete content residing in repositories across the enterprise. Coupled with Records Manager, CFS can prevent unauthorized access, inadvertent or intentional alteration or destruction of official records, and enforce legal holds while preserving a full audit trail.

FileNet will complement its Records Management product with Yaletown's Records Crawler product. Working in conjunction with FileNet P8's Records Manager and Email Manager suites, Records Crawler for FileNet can scan Microsoft File Servers at high speed to examine documents a user creates and automatically declare only those documents as records that meet pre-set business rules. Records Crawler is designed to draw on the rules established in FileNet's Records Manager's File Plan, which companies design as part of their compliance strategy.
