LexisNexis' legal tool

LexisNexis has unveiled Total Search, what the company describes as an integrated search application that enhances knowledge sharing within a law firm by providing access to both internal and external content in a single search using the lexis.com user interface. Total Search provides access to internal content such as briefs, pleadings and memoranda while simultaneously searching the content available from LexisNexis.

The company explains Total Search allows users to research a specific case, legal issue or even a person at lexis.com while automatically searching for-- and intelligently linking--to on-point information within the firm's documents, reducing search time, creating new efficiencies and increasing productivity. Users have the flexibility to search internal and LexisNexis content in a single search, or begin their research within the firm's internal documents prior to searching LexisNexis or other external information providers, says the company.

LexisNexis Total Search expands the boundaries of the LexisNexis Total Research System to maximize the use of a law firm's most prized intellectual property--its internal work product. Combining LexisNexis' 30 years of experience in data management and retrieval with superior analytical, legal and statutory content, legal professionals using LexisNexis Total Search can ‘close the research loop' and deliver the highest quality work product to colleagues and clients.

LexisNexis claims Total Search offers the following benefits for law firms:

  • reduced volume of unproductive e-mail exchanges, intranet postings or queries seeking prior experience on specific research or assignments;
  • shared best practices, writing styles, formats and templates among groups and team members;
  • enhanced and fostered training of junior attorneys to increase their value to the overall organization; and
  • maximized return on investments in document management systems and other applications through the capture and reuse of work product that might otherwise be lost.

Total Search is deployed from a firm's document repository, an enhanced lexis.com user interface and a user's Internet browser. LexisNexis provides intelligent cross-referencing of relevant LexisNexis content and internal work product based on case citations and legal topics.
