 Future of KM - What's Next ? webinar Nov 17, 11AM PT, 2PM ET

The Future of KM
Tuesday, Nov 17 | 11:00 am PT, 2:00 pm ET

Knowledge management has hit plenty of bumps in the road over the years. Dismissed as "faddish" and beset with many failed projects, KM has been frequently the target of disbelievers and dubious bean-counters.

Those days are gone. Thanks to recent advances in better analytics and less expensive start-up costs, KM is now back in favor of the ruling class, and adopted widely by the working class, too. It's now safe to say that mentioning knowledge management initiatives will no longer get you thrown out of the boardroom.

So what's next? That's what we want to learn from this special KMWorld webcast, "The Future of KM." It's an ambitious goal, but let's guide the next generation of KM into a successful future.

We will opt for the former, and find ways to help organizations reconstruct their ECM programs so that information does not go wasted.

Best Practices in Knowledge Management

KNOW THIS: KNOWLEDGE IS ELUSIVE

Many knowledge management gurus will tell you that knowledge cannot be "managed," in the typical sense. Data can be managed. Information can be managed. But "knowledge" is in some kind of fourth dimension, outside of the reach of control.

Maybe it's a semantic argument. But there are plenty of people out there who are active knowledge managers--some with business cards that say so!--and spend their days managing their organizations' knowledge just fine, thank you very much.

But there IS a point to the pundits' argument: Knowledge is not easy to put your finger on. It's an ethereal thing; it's not simply data, and it's not simply "what's in people's heads" either. It's both. So to conduct knowledge management requires a deep understanding of the business AND the workers who walk in and walk out of your buildings every day.

The next KMWorld White Paper--"Best Practices in Knowledge Management"--will try to unravel that knot.
