Picture of Arup BanerjiArup Banerji is the Director of Global Knowledge at the World Bank Group, where he leads a transformative initiative to position knowledge as a strategic asset in addressing today’s most complex development challenges. In this role, he is at the forefront of the Bank’s efforts to become a more agile and impactful “Knowledge Bank,” ensuring that global expertise informs scalable solutions and shapes international development discourse.

With nearly three decades at the World Bank, Arup has held senior leadership roles including Regional Director for Eastern Europe and the European Union, and Senior Director for Social Protection and Jobs. He has overseen operations across diverse regions and thematic areas—from labor markets and pensions to economic justice and global policy—bringing a deep understanding of development finance, strategic partnerships, and institutional transformation.

Arup holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. (Honours) in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.
