Using knowledge graphs to examine scenarios at KMWorld 2019
Taxonomies are the foundation for controlled vocabularies, which enable enhanced search, categorization and the ongoing development of ontologies.
Moving beyond taxonomies and ontologies, however, the development of knowledge graphs starts to add the semantic layer needed to enrich and enhance all types of information.
Mike Doane, senior lecturer, Information School, University of Washington, discussed how knowledge graphs can benefit an organization in his KMWorld 2019 session, “The Future of Taxonomy: Knowledge Graphs.” This session was part of the Taxonomy Bootcamp taking place alongside KMWorld.

“Knowledge graphs are the future of taxonomy work,” Doane said. “They are the logical extensions of ontologies.”
Knowledge Graphs represent entities as nodes and the ways in which those entities relate to the world as relationships, he explained. They are closely integrated with internal and external databases
Building a knowledge graph entails:
- Starting with users and user needs
- Continue with a story
- Is built out in iterative fashion
Doane referenced a UW Study Abroad summer 2019 program in Vienna, Austria tasked with creating knowledge graphs dealing with travel.
Those students worked on creating scenarios where a knowledge graph could be used to design an information space to assist a user group.
They chose to focus on a visually impaired traveler who had low-vision capabilities and wants to visit wellknown tourist sites with as much relevant information as possible.
By building a knowledge graph the students were able to narrow down a travel plan that would accommodate this traveler.
“We set out with a desire to create user scenario and we knew we had solid ontology behind us,” Doanne said.
