Pinnacle Micro Unveils 5.2 GB optical drive

Pinnacle Micro has introduced the Ultra, a new rewritable 5.2 GB optical drive. The Ultra drive offers a 4 MB cache and 20 ms average seek time, and is backward compatible with 2.6 GB and 1.3 GB drives as well as 650 MB media, something not offered by some competitors. It's compatible with ISO 5.25-inch MO standards, and works with Windows 95 and NT, Novell, Unix and Mac platforms. For reliable storage needs, MO is the way to go, according to Pinnacle Micro president and CEO William Blum. "Rewritable optical technology remains the most reliable solution for applications that require dependable, transportable, high capacity storage." The Ultra package includes a SCSI-2 controller card (PC models), cables, one piece of media and a two-year warranty. Pricing is $2,149 for an internal version and $2,249 for an external version. Production shipping is slated for July.
