Verbatim Takes Wraps off Storage Scanner

Fulfilling the promise from last year's AIIM show,

Verbatim (Charlotte, NC) has released its SS600 storage scanner. The scanner, which won a "best concept" award at AIIM '97, consists of a high-speed ADF flatbed scanner coupled with a removable storage device, either a 650 MB CD-Rewritable drive or 640 MG 3.5-inch MO drive. The scanner offers 300 x 600 dpi optical resolutions (up to 9600 dpi translated) and comes with an automatic document feeder that scans up to 50 PPM. The storage devices store up to 2,780 full-screen, full-color images and over 55,500 pages of full text. The system is bundled with OptiDoc document imaging software, which includes Caere's OCR technology for quick file indexing and retrieval. An ODBC-compliant SQL database from Sybase is also included. With a CD-RW drive, a Master CD is included with Adaptec's EZ CD Creator and DirectCD CD-recording software for PC environments (Toast software for Mac systems). The SS600 "is more than just a document imaging starter kit," said Verbatim product manager Ted Chu. "It's a complete document management solution for small organizations or departments." The SS600 storage scanner is available for $3,499, which includes the scanner and removable storage device, an Advansys driver set, OptiDoc software, a PCI SCSI card and a SCSI cable. A stripped-down version is available for $2,199.
