Sun Announces Q2 '98 Financial Results

Due in large part to several acquisition-related charges, Sun Microsystems (Mountain View, CA) reports a net income of $149.4 million, a 16% decrease from Q2 '97. A 25% increase in operating expenses was not enough to offset the charges. Revenue of $2.45 billion represents an 18% increase from Q2 '97. Growth in the commercial, technical and consumer markets is attributed to an "unrelenting focus" and investments in its Java programming language, Solaris version of the UNIX operating system and Sparc processors. "At the current rate, we will be spending more than $1 billion in research and development," according to CFO Michael Lehman.
