Novell Wins Out in Groupware Study

Novell's (Provo, UT) GroupWise has a lower cost of ownership than either Lotus

' (Cambridge, MA) Notes or Microsoft (Redmond, WA) Exchange, according to a new study from Gartner Group (Stamford, CT). The study, jointly sponsored by IBM (Armonk, NY), Microsoft, Netscape (Mountain View, CA), Novell and Oracle (Redwood Shores, CA), compares the computing solutions of over 300 companies on a cost-per-user basis. On a three-year basis, Novell's GroupWise had a cost-per-user of $136; Exchange came in second at $486, with Notes costing $719 per user. It's a win for Novell in a very competitive groupware market, according to Peter Janak, VP and CIO at TRW (Oakland, CA). "The ability to install and operate business critical-workgroup solutions efficiently is a pivotal success factor for businesses of all sizes," he said. The study can be viewed at Novell's website.
