NEC Throws Weight Behind Intel/NT Workstations

Japanese computer giant NEC has proclaimed its support for and promotion of Intel/Windows NT-based workstations for its customers. The company has announced its plans to migrate its own mechanical and electronic CAD design users from UNIX-based workstations to Windows NT-based Intel workstations. NEC is currently showcasing its Express 5800 workstation at the Workstation Leadership Forum in Seattle. NEC and Intel have also opened an Intel Architecture Application Solutions Center. The Tokyo laboratory will collaborate with application software vendors to optimize both workstation and server applications for the IA-32, and enable the migration to Intel's forthcoming Merced processor. The Intel/NT support will allow NEC to give its customers and internal users "the applications they need and provide remarkable performance and value," said Kazuhiko Kobayashi, NEC associate senior VP.
