IDC report shows Web access to document management

According a report from International Data (IDC, Framingham, MA,

http://idcresearch.com), the number of users accessing a document management repository with a browser grew from zero at the end of 1995 to over 93,000 by the end of 1996. Based on the IDC report, the market for electronic document management solutions grew to 208,025 users by the end of 1996.

Current electronic document management Web products' abilities range from full access through a Web browser to view-only access. The report weighs the products' functionality two ways: Web-enabled-those with full browser functionality; and Web-accessible-those solutions that provide limited EDM function access to a Web browser client.

IDC gives Livelink Intranet from Open Text (Waterloo, Ontario, http://www.opentext.com) credit for leading the Web-enabled document management market with 64% of new users turning to its product. Interleaf's (Waltham, MA, http://www.ileaf.com) BusinessWeb was judged the leading Web-accessible document management solution with 61% of the market for the segment.
