Hummingbird opens door to portal suite

The new Enterprise Portal Suite from Hummingbird combines the company’s data integration, reporting and knowledge management technology into a unified solution. New application collaboration features enable users to perform tasks such as checking a business intelligence report into the document management system and building document binders for information delivery without having to enter a specific application. The goal of this approach is to hide the complexities of the underlying applications and to create a user-centric computing environment in which employees can work more effectively.

The Enterprise Portal Suite is designed to be platform and application independent. Hummingbird’s commitment to open standards for its developer community and customers is demonstrated by the XML-based, third-party application integration in support for scripting languages including BML, JavaScript, VBScript, ActivePearl, Jpython, JACL and NetREXX.

By facilitating the purchase and deployment of the underlying information management and decision support tools, Portal Suite is expected to expand the deployment of document management and business intelligence functionality from its traditional departmental confines to the entire enterprise.

Enterprise Portal Suite will begin shipping in the next 30 days.

In other news, Hummingbird announces the release of its Enterprise Information Portal Developer’s Edition, which is available for free download. It includes a single-user version of the EIP engine, as well as the implementation tools needed for corporate portal implementation before upgrading to the full product.

The Hummingbird EIP uses an XML-based, innovative e-Clip plug-in architecture to provide integration with existing enterprise sources. An e-Clip can deliver content to your EIP workspace by reformatting information from text and HTML sources, and it can deliver interactive applications such as a calculator, a navigation bar, or a user page editor, through the Hummingbird EIP.
