H-P, Adobe and Microsoft team up to produce scan-to-Web

Hewlett-Packard (HP, Palo Alto, CA, http://www.hp.com

), Adobe (San Jose, http://www.adobe.com) and Microsoft (Redmond, WA, http://www.microsoft.com) are providing an MSFT search engine that will produce a scan-to-Web system to deliver scanned documents to commercial intranets and the Internet. The solution combines HP's Network ScanJet 5 scanner with Adobe Acrobat Capture 2.0 software and Microsoft Index Server 1.1.

Workgroups convert paper documents into electronic formats using the HP scanner, while conversion to portable document format (PDF) is accomplished using Capture. The Microsoft Index server monitors file-server locations, assigns documents a URL and posts them to the appropriate Web page. Using Adobe's IFilter for PDF, the Microsoft Index server can index and search PDF documents in one step.

"Our legal and service bureau clients are interested in cost-effective paper-to-Web solutions," said Robert Berghell, a Los Angeles VAR. "This solution has increased our clients' efficiency tremendously."
