Documenting radioactive waste clean-up efforts

BNFL, the U.S. subsidiary of British Nuclear Fuels Ltd., will use document and configuration management technology to support a clean up a $6.9 billion cleanup project of radioactive waste.

BNFL's Tank Waste Remediation System facility, scheduled to begin operations in the year 2000, will clean up highly radioactive waste stored in underground tanks at the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford site near Richland, Washington. BNFL will use document management, workflow and computer aided design from Altris Software to maintain all documentation concerning the design, construction, and operation and eventually decommissioning of the 30-year project.

Initially the system will support 150 users at the Hanford site; BNFL is expected to expand the system to six other sites in the U.S
