Dataware adds object indexing system from NEC

Dataware users will be able to manage digital images as knowledge assets, thanks to a new licensing deal with NEC.

NEC's Advanced Multimedia Oriented Retrieval Engine (AMORE, released last fall) will be bundled with Dataware's knowledge management systems, helping users create large intranet databases of digital images which can be categorized and managed individually, e.g. a publisher could build a database of stock photographs.

The Dataware/AMORE combination will also let users categorize images as objects described within other images or documents, rather than based on textual descriptions. For example, a user could categorize a business document based on an embedded diagram, or retrieve the Statue of Liberty from an image of the New York cityscape.

"This technology will allow us to move toward solutions that are able to deal with the multiple types of knowledge that users are interacting with," said Howie York, Dataware VP of Software Solutions.

Initial applications of Dataware/AMORE technology are planned for Q3 of this year, with full integration expected in the next 12 months.
