Claris Announces Restructuring

Apple (Cupertino, CA) subsidiary Claris

(Santa Clara, CA) has announced it is restructuring its activities, resulting in a name change to FileMaker, Inc. The restructuring includes the divestiture of all products other than the FileMaker Pro database product line. Approximately 300 Claris employees will be laid off. Claris' Emailer, ClarisDraw, ClarisImpact, and Claris Organizer product lines will move to Apple. Apple will also develop, distribute, and support ClarisWorks. The restructuring allows Claris to focus its energies on its successful FileMaker database technology, which is the most popular database software for the Macintosh and the second most popular standalone database software for Windows. FileMaker Pro had $24 million in sales last quarter, and the Windows version saw a 77% increase in sales from the same quarter a year ago.
