Breakthrough for managing 2GB-plus files in SharePoint

Metalogix reports its latest version of StoragePoint gives organizations the ability to store, access and backup files larger than 2GB through SharePoint. This capability is fully integrated directly within SharePoint 2010 and 2013 and is said to work seamlessly with SharePoint features such as metadata management and workflows.

For organizations that work with extremely large files that routinely exceed 2GB, such as 3D CAD drawings, software builds and high definition media files, it was previously impossible to store these files in SharePoint due to its file size limitations. These limitations forced business users to store and access files outside SharePoint in content silos that resulted in process errors, productivity loss, security risks and complicated backup procedures. Now, StoragePoint makes it possible for organization to rely exclusively on SharePoint for managing files of any size, thus improving collaboration, productivity and content governance, says Metalogix.

Other features in the new StoragePoint include the ability to continuously and automatically back up unstructured SharePoint content, known as binary large objects (BLOBs), eliminating the need for costly, time-consuming backups. StoragePoint, which fully supports SharePoint 2007, 2010 and 2013, enables organizations to externalize SharePoint content to shrink database sizes, cut storage cost and boost performance by moving BLOBs outside of SQL servers on to affordable external storage tiers, including SAN, NAS or the cloud. Metalogix reports that by externalizing BLOBs, StoragePoint improves SharePoint performance by shrinking databases by up to 95%.
