Arizona deserts manual tax return processing

By switching to an electronic processing system, the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) expects to cut the time it takes to process its 8 million yearly tax returns by 30 percent.

Early next year ADOR will roll out a payment processing and data entry system designed by KPMG's document management practice. The tax processing system includes Datacap Taskmaster workflow and Paper Keyboard software, which will automate the data entry and payment processing of all tax forms. The system also incorporates a remittance-processing component for handling monies paid by tax filers and a back-end storage system. By automating the processes, ADOR employees can go from pushing paper and entering data to directly supporting taxpayers, answering questions and resolving problems. "We want to be responsive," said Vincent Perez, ADOR's public information officer. "Getting taxpayers' money back in their hands as quickly as possible is about as responsive as a government agency can be."
