Thermo dynamically delivers

Three major Web initiatives have been launched by Thermo Electron, based on portal technology from Vignette.

Thermo has created Web sites for each of its three global business units: Measurement and Control, Life Sciences and Optical Technologies. The three sites will be consolidated under one portal, to help further Thermo’s one-company branding strategy. Web managers at each of the units can update information from the corporate site. Then the relevant information can be distributed to the correct line of business that requires the updated information. The software, called Vignette Enterprise Application Portal (VEAP), will power the company’s flagship Web site and its intranet site.

Markus Leibundgut, director of e-business development for Thermo Electron, says, “In consolidating our business lines, Vignette’s content management applications will enable Thermo to provide our worldwide customers the ability to purchase many of our key products online. [Such] quick and scalable applications provide the structure that Thermo sought to manage our business portals, intranet and corporate Web site, which in turn allows us to provide our customers with relevant and updated content.”

In addition to VEAP, Thermo has implemented the Vignette Content Management Server and the Vignette Lifecycle Personalization Server, which enable the company to create and manage diverse, personalized content across its sites, according to a recent press release.

The new content applications will help Thermo “increase the efficiency of its lines of business and provide a better customer experience overall,” says Dan J. Lautenbach, senior VP of global sales and operations at Vignette.

Thermo Electron provides technology-based instruments, components and systems for such markets as life sciences; telecommunications; and food, drug and beverage production. It reported $2.3 billion in revenues in 2000 and employs about 12,000 people worldwide.
