Speedier distribution of "decs"

Maine Employers Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC) has chosen a new document delivery system to speed receipt of important documents by customers and agents. With the solution, the workers' compensation insurer will be able to send policy declarations, or "decs," to clients via e-mail and have them accessible to agents through a secure Web portal.

According to Whitehill Technologies, its product xml Transport will extract data from the insurer's existing systems and convert the data—both structured (tables and databases) and unstructured data (text)--into the open, flexible XML data standard. MEMIC then formats the data with Whitehill Layout Designer into professional-looking documents, which can be delivered via the Web, e-mail, print, mail or fax, Whitehill adds.

"Producing decs is only the first step for us," says Gary Baxter, senior VP and CIO of MEMIC. "We see the potential to generate all sorts of documents using the solution down the road. We're expecting it to be a major part of our document delivery system in the next couple of years."

Baxter continues, "We have separate systems for claims and underwriting. With the XML engine in xml Transport, we have the potential to set up an internal Web services-type of environment. We see the opportunity to use the system for inter-process communications."
