Conversion services for publishers

The British Library has chosen a data conversion services provider for its Publisher Digitization Service, which offers a "one-stop shop" for publishers who digitize and publish archive material from journal collections.

Innodata Isogen will provide the data conversion, including XML markup and enrichment, and, when needed, content-related consulting services to British Library customers.

"By partnering, we can offer the publishing industry an end-to-end content sourcing and digitization solution that can save time and money," says Mat Pfleger, the British Library's head of sales and marketing, "while removing the logistical and content sourcing frustrations associated with archive and conversion programs. Our strength in content and primary digitization, coupled with Innodata Isogen's knowledge, technological expertise and production capabilities, can deliver a real benefit for publishers embarking on digitization programs."

Noting that the British Library has more than 388 miles of shelves holding 150 million items, Innodata Isogen CEO and Chairman Jack Abuhoff says the library can help publishers find and digitize materials. "We can then convert this digitized data into Web-ready formats at massive scales and build searchable XML repositories," he adds.

The intent of the British Library's Publisher Digitization Service is to help publishers take advantage of an untapped asset--their backfiles, Innodata Isogen reports in a recent news release.
